“As in generations past”

The following is a goal from the proposed VisionPDX statement, which was finalized last Friday, and as far as I know first posted here on my blog yesterday:

“As in generations past, Portlanders find unique ways to solve
problems collectively because the City of Portland encourages
public deliberation and considers public decisions from
multiple viewpoints.

Yeah. Right.

If the future process for making public decisions considering multiple viewponts is “as in generations past”, i.e., like this one, we may as well all stay home and watch football.

“Public deliberation” and “considers …. from multiple viewpoints” cannot happen in two days.

I’m working on trying to alert school advocates about the issues I commented on yesterday. At 3 p.m., I realized there is no way I can hope to have any chance of affecting change in the proposal on that one topic, and still have time to prepare a thoughtful post on the rest of the recommended Vision. So the latter isn’t happening. And I find that extremely frustrating.

This Vision process has been disappointing on and off since its inception, but this final turn is beyond pathetic.

Check back here later tonight for proposed amendments to the Learning Portland section. At this point I would bag the entire thing and go do something more productive, like changing the cat litter, if it weren’t for the possibility of the Vision being used in the Comprehensive Plan update.
