Details matter

While serving on the Planning Commission, I was often chided for making the Commission spend time going over the details of proposed code and policy language. “We’re here to set direction for the Big Picture, and let staff take care of the details”, was the refrain. My response was almost always to point out that the code language and specific wording in policy documents defines the Big Picture and makes sure it is implemented as intended. We can have all the fine policy aspirations in the world, but if the practical, on-the-ground standards don’t match the goals, Portland won’t continue to grow into an ever healthier, fairer city.

I’m reminded of this by the recent Associated Press article describing how the incorrect citation of a previous legal case in a federal prosecution cost the government (i.e., the taxpayers), $100,000,000.

Details matter.
