Not so good
Steve and I went to see the Winterhawks at Memorial Coliseum yesterday afternoon. Not as much fun as the last time we watched them, at the Rose Garden. As we walked to our seats, my shoes were doing that sticking-to-the-tacky-floor sound with every step. Hey ServiceMaster, how about paying your janitors to work more hours, so they can clean horizontal surfaces between events? There didn’t seem to be any heat in the building, or at least not close to sufficient. The aisle attendant told Steve he must stop using his telephoto lens unless he had a press pass (anyone know if I can get one for this blog’s illustrations, and if so, how?), as if there is a brisk black market for amateur game shots of minor league hockey players. And I hadn’t realized the Coliseum doesn’t have a big screen TV in the center console any more. Steve said he thought he remembered it being sold to a university. Not much point in doing the actions to “YMCA” if you don’t have the chance to be seen on TV by thousands, messing up the actions to “YMCA”, is there?
I wonder if the powers-that-be are trying to make events at the Coliseum less enjoyable than those at the Rose Garden?
We had a good time anyway. People-watching, snacking, and following the game are fun whatever the venue. Many families with small children were enjoying the outing together, also a surprising number of middle-aged men watching by themselves. The photo above shows the scoring of the first goal by the Canadian team. The Hawks lost 4-0, having put themselves in that hole in the first period. Despite the score, their defence is pretty good. Their offense consists of whoever gets the puck on defence whacking it up the ice in the vague direction of the goal, even if said goal is surrounded by a sea of navy shirts and the complete absence of white ones. Perhaps I don’t understand the finer points of the game yet, but it seems to me they might have more success if they put a man somewhere near the goal and passed it to him. Just an idea.
