St. Johns Bridge

Portland’s most northerly bridge over the Willamette was completed in 1931. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, it is the only major highway suspension bridge in the Willamette Valley and one of only three major highway suspension bridges in Oregon.

The bridge is named after the city of St. Johns, which in turn honors James Johns, an early settler who operated a one-rowboat ferry system. So there you have it, in case you’ve been wondering: no apostrophe in “Johns”. The bridge’s color is “Verde green”, or green-in-Spanish green.

A $42m renovation of the bridge was completed in 2005.
