Current Council Priorities
Here’s something interesting I learned at the Portland Parks & Recreation budget meeting earlier this week:
Our City Council has adopted five Overarching Goals for its work this year. I’d like to give you a link to this important policy directive, but I don’t see one on Portlandonline. Betcha these goals are the results of several hours’ discussion, even an all-day retreat. All budget proposals are supposed to relate to at least one of these goals for city actions:
* Family friendly
* Sustainable economic development
* Public safety and emergency preparedness
* Energy Alternatives
* Rebuild the infrastructure
I am hard pressed to think of any potential action by the City Council that would not fit into one of these categories. Flying child-delighting helium balloons of different colors indicating the current level of terrorism alert, with corporate sponsor logos, from newly-installed helium balloon-flying hooks on the roof of City Hall, would meet all five.
Other suggestions for projects that would meet the Goals, and any that might not, welcome.
It’ll be interesting to see what next year’s Overarching Goals will be. Radically different, no doubt.
