The City Council Agenda this upcoming week has several hold-over items of interest. The 10 a.m. Wednesday Time Certain on the Sit-Lie ordinance, covered extensively at Loaded Orygun here and more recently here, is accompanied by a resolution establishing a committee to oversee the rest of the SAFE (Street Access For Everyone) project’s plans. The Consent Agenda contains over $1.5m in funding to various agencies helping homeless people; I hope the two are connected. But still, I don’t believe taking away civil liberties in exchange for providing basic services is good public policy.

The final item on Wednesday morning is the vote on the new list of things we aren’t allowed to do in Portland’s parks. At 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, there’s the hearing on accepting the 2006 report on Officer-involved Shootings from the Independent Police Review Division, postponed from two weeks ago when the Auditor published said report one hour before the public hearing.

Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. is a celebration of “Safety Recognition Day”. The one link for information Google is able to direct me to, on the city’s web site or anywhere else, is photos of the 2004 “Safety Recognition Day” event. It appears to be a celebration of city employees’ risk management efforts. Is that a good guess, anyone who knows? At 3 p.m. on Thursday, the Council will “Proclaim January 2007 to be Mentoring Month in Portland”. Isn’t it a bit late in the month? No matter, get out there and mentor, people.
