High School web page entirely in Latin

Wow, maybe the standard of education is higher in Washington state after all. In checking yesterday to find the address of Rainier High School for my nephew’s first game at quarterback for Northwest Christian High School’s football team, I found this page under Administration. It says, in its entirety,

“Header Text”

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consetetur sadipscing elitr, sed diam nonumy eirmod tempor invidunt ut labore et dolore magna aliquyam erat, sed diam voluptua. At vero eos et accusam et justo duo dolores et ea rebum. Stet clita kasd gubergren, no sea takimata sanctus est Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.”

One of the high schools in my hometown had the motto “Virutem petamus”, which the boy students translated as “We seek virgins” (it’s actually “We seek virtue”). I haven’t seen this much Latin on a high school site before. And it’s been thirty years since I could have made an attempt at translating it. Apparently not only the educators but also the citizens of Rainier see no need for an English version … a veritable hotspot of Latin enthusiasts, apparently. Impressive.
